Choosing a Summer Holiday in Paxos, Greece

Most people think of a holiday in Greece as seeing ancient sites. However, I chose a Paxos holiday as a way to relax and enjoy the beauty of the country, the sea and the Greek people. Because it can only be reached by ferry and does not have an airport, Paxos, 14 kilometres south of Corfu, is quiet, tranquil and has lots of charm. It is one of a number of picturesque islands rising from the Ionian Sea. Villages in Paxos include Gaios, Lakka and Loggos. What better place to experience delicious Greek food and exciting Greek dancing!

Gaios

Beautiful Gaios, a fishing village with cafes and shops situated along the waterfront, is a port town with so much charm. The picturesque inlet of Gaios harbor is formed by the waters near St. Nicholas Island. Traditional Greek food can be found at the restaurants, including Genesis, which is also a great place to see Greek dancing. Vontza Restaurant is another choice, where freshly cooked fish and Greek specialties are cooked to order. One can even find pizza in Gaios. Greek specialties include souvlaki, aubergine, lamb and much more. All served with delicious wines. For travellers interested in the culture and history of Paxos, which is thought in myth to have been created by Poseidon, there is a museum on the harbor side of the village in Gaios.

Lakka

With a stunning bay, Lakka is the second largest village in Paxos. Swimming in the calm bay is just one of the reasons to visit this village, and an array of water sports is found here. Olive trees and cypress overlook the town, which has an assortment of local tavernas and bars to choose from. Magnificent crystal clear water awaits the traveller here.

I chose to stay in picturesque Lakka, in the sun drenched Livadi Studios. Only 800 metres from the harbor, some balconies overlook the garden and it has all the amenities, including a swimming pool. Orange, lemon and olive trees surround the studios, as well as an abundance of flowers. It was recommended to me as a clean, comfortable and very charming place to spend a holiday. I think Livadi Studios will be an amazing place to be this summer.

Loggos

Shops and cafes line the harbor and one can pass the day relaxing in this fishing village, near Lakka. Fresh fruits and vegetables and baked goods are brought here from the mainland, so relaxing and visiting the colourful tavernas is easily done here.

Paxos is an island where lazy days can be spent in summer. Mix with locals, enjoy the quirky tavernas, buy local produce, eat fresh fish or get married here; this relaxing Greece holiday will long be remembered.
